Chapter 6

Layla

It’s been a few days. Dwight and I have texted each other, but I’m already missing him. By the time Wednesday rolls around, I’m wishing I hadn’t left things the way I did.

Rather than stewing in my own thoughts for another evening, I decide to invite Aubrey over. She’s at least able to hobble around now well enough to get from her car to my house. I live in a 1950’s bungalow on the outskirts of Sugar Hill, a far cry from the penthouse apartment I grew up in. But I love it here. The house has character in its squeaky floorboards and warped windows.

“Girl, get in here. I ordered pizza with extra cheesy bread. It should be here in five minutes.” I call from the living room. Aubrey has an open invitation to my home, so she lets herself in.

“I hope you have wine to go with it,” she calls back.

“You know me. I bought a whole new box. If we need to, we can repurpose my Nalgene bottles, and pour it in there.”

“And drink it from a straw?” Aubrey has her hand on her chest, gasping dramatically.

“Well, it’s good practice.”

“Practice for what? It’s not like either of us are getting any.”

“That’s what you think,” I reply, predicting her reaction.

“What!” Aubrey quickly waddles over to the couch. She’s got one of those boots for sprained ankles, and when she tries to walk faster, she looks a bit like a duck. “Ugh, I can’t wait to feel better. Now, tell me everything.”

I recap the last week for her, giving her the scoop on everything Dwight. “But I’m worried. He’s amazing, but he seems so normal. While I’m so…not.”

“I think you’re giving ‘normal’ more credit than it deserves. The definition of normal is socially constructed and highly subjective. What’s ‘normal’ in a beach town like Haven Falls will be completely different from what’s normal here in Oakwood City,” she counters.

“But he’s closer to normal,” I argue.

Aubrey rolls her eyes before I even finish my sentence. “You know I do this for a living, right? I literally have a degree in psychology and human behavior. Trust me when I tell you, with all the love in my heart, to get over yourself.” She grabs my glass of wine and sets it on the table with hers. Then she takes my hands in hers, forcing me to take her seriously.

“Layla.” She looks right into my eyes. “You are enough. You don’t have to change anything about who you are. But you have a choice. Do you want to see where things can go with Dwight?”

“I think so.” I take a deep breath, searching my heart for the answer. “Yes, I do.”

“Then you need to let go of that fear and give him a chance.”

“Okay. Okay. I can do that.”

“Good.” She picks up her glass of wine and flops back onto the couch. “Now, what should we watch? Romance Actually or One Year, One Choice?”

Laughing, I grab my own glass and take a sip.
